Police say three vehicles were stolen in the past week from New Canaan homes.

At about 9:55 p.m. on May 27, officers were dispatched to Carter Street to investigate a report of two vehicles stolen from a driveway during a barbecue at the residence, according to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.

The 2020 Audi A8 and 2020 Mercedes Benz GLS both were left unlocked with their keys inside, the press release said.

One of them had lacrosse equipment inside, as well as a wallet with a driver’s license and credit cards, Krolikowski said in the release.

The Audi was recovered a few days later in Meriden, he said.

Then at about 4:47 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to a Canoe Hill Road home on a report of a 2021 Lexus RX350 that had been stolen from the driveway, also unlocked with its keys inside.

A few hours later, at 8:32 p.m., police were dispatched to a Hoyt Farm Road home on a report of a suspicious person on the property.

“It is believed that this suspect intended to steal a vehicle, but was scared away when he saw a video camera,” Krolikowski said. (A video of the incident can be seen here.)

The chief urged residents to lock their vehicles, take their keys with them and never leave valuables inside.

“Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen,” he said.
