Town officials broke ground with Eversource on Wednesday for the company’s $25 million natural gas project. It will start with the installation of 4.7 miles of underground pipeline, making the fuel available to more than 500 homes and businesses. This first phase should be completed before the end of 2018. Large oak trees fell in and around Mill Pond during a recent storm, and on Wednesday, DPW crews worked with the tree warden who hired a crane to get the logs and trees back onto the road. The Highway Department then cut them up and placed them into trucks to haul out.

This year’s “Clean Your Mile” effort—which sees citizens individually tackling their neighborhoods, community groups scouring public spaces including parks and schools and merchants clean up sidewalks, storage areas and parking spaces surrounding the shops and restaurants—is scheduled for the week of Aril 16 to 22. More than 250 individual volunteers and members of numerous community organizations will be asked to help give New Canaan its annual spring cleaning to help beautify our town and environment. Parks, parking lots, schools and public areas will be designated to youth groups and civic organizations. Individuals, families or groups who are willing to clean up the roadside trash on their street can email Lola Sweeney, Administrative Assistant at lola.sweeney@newcanaanct.gov or call, 203.594.3089 to sign up for a location and provide a contact email. Garbage bags are available at either the Public Works Department or Inland Wetlands at Town Hall. Dumpsters will be located in the train station commuter lot Friday to Sunday. In addition, Public Works can be contacted at 203-594-3054 for pickup of objects too large for volunteers to remove.

Bankwell donated to the Junior Achievement 2018 Stock Market Challenge that will take place on April 18th in support of JA’s Financial Literacy Month. The event provides the opportunity for local high school students to experience the world of Wall Street with a “mock” trading floor where they will gain an understanding of the financial markets by making decisions, analyzing decision and planning ahead.

Congratulations to St. Aloysius School seventh grade twins Anna and Noelle, along with their third grade sister Lilly Gayer, participated in the Read to Feed (aka “Heifer Project International”) Contest. The challenge was to read as many books as possible within a “40 day Lenten” period. This annual community project has been implemented as a part of the Catholic alms giving. In its 17th year of participation, St. A’s was proud of all of its students that participated.
