The pet-friendly rock salt is flying off of the shelves at Weed & Duryea, a manager of the downtown New Canaan mainstay said Saturday afternoon.
On Thursday, Weed & Duryea brought in seven additional pallets of salt—various mixtures as well as pure rock salt—and then seven more on Friday, Barry Coleman told NewCanaanite.com.
“But now we’re winding down,” Coleman said as customers hustled into and out of the store before the snow arrived on Saturday afternoon. “What we have left, we have left.”

The store closes at 5 p.m. Saturday and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service is calling for up to four inches of snow in New Canaan by night’s end. It comes on the heels of back-to-back snow-and-sleet storms that cancelled school twice this past week, shut down municipal offices intermittently and brought some flooding to town streets.
Given recent and expected colder temperatures, Coleman recommended a mixture rather than rock salt.
“Rock salt doesn’t really work at cold temperatures and you need much more of it,” he said. Mixtures include those with calcium, magnesium and potassium.

“Also the mixtures are friendly for the dogs or cats,” he said.
Anyone walking pets around town or even along sidewalks outside of town may want to invest in some safeguards for four-legged pals against the salt on the roads, which can cause ulcers.
