What Drug Abuse and Addiction Look Like in New Canaan: A Panel Discussion

Kera Townshend, a former captain of the New Canaan High School cheerleading squad, gave a glowing description Wednesday of her accomplishments and life in this town and then in college, with plenty to impress admissions officers, job interviewers or any audience. Then she gave the audience of well over 200 New Canaanites — at a panel discussion in Town Hall about heroin, opiod and general drug abuse — the seamy underside: Anxiety and, in some areas, lack of self confidence and wanting to get along, led her into some sordid drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Addictions which stuck even after she thought she’d conquered them. Townshend was one of several speakers discussing opioid, heroin and substance addiction in general at a panel discussion that packed the community meeting room at Town Hall. It was organized by the League of Women Voters of New Canaan.

Field Improvements, Live TV Described in New Canaan Athletics Program Presentation

Renovations for Dunning Field, proposed new turf fields and live TV streaming of New Canaan and other FCIAC high school sports games are what the New Canaan High School athletics department will be planning for in the upcoming school year. That’s according to the school’s Athletic Director Jay Egan, who gave a presentation about the athletic program at a Board of Education meeting on Aug. 17. This selection of Power Point illustrations from Egan’s presentation to the board (not in the order Egan gave them):

Egan’s presentation also described the values that the athletic program tries to instill in student sports players and compared the budget of the athletic program with those of Darien and Wilton. Egan also listed numerous victories and awards school athletes and teams achieved in the last  school year:

New Canaan High School was the only high school in Connecticut to win four state championships during the 2015 spring season.
