‘It Grows Tall and Straight’: Sugar Maple Tree Planted at Town Hall in Memory of Ben Olmstead Sees Its First Spring

It’s been nearly two years since a beloved, longtime New Canaan public works employee died on the job following an accident. Ben Olmstead was known by family, residents, co-workers and friends for his kind and generous spirit and his vast, detailed knowledge of the town’s infrastructure and history. Killed on July 23, 2014 by a slow-moving motor vehicle while striping the road with spray paint for a sewer hookup to a residence near the corner of routes 123 and 106—Olmstead knew so much about New Canaan that what he could do in a part-time job is now being done by full-time workers. He was “a tremendously valuable person,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said. “He was kind and had many relationships with people around town, really an ideal employee,” the first selectman said.

Town Approves $120,500 Contract for Waveny House Roof Repair

New Canaan is entering a $120,500 contract with a White Plains, N.Y.-based architectural firm as it pursues a much-needed repair of the roof at Waveny House. The 14,000-square-foot roof has been leaking, according to Bill Oestmann, superintendent of buildings and fleet with the town’s Department of Public Works. “Replacing the concrete that the roof is made of would be very difficult and expensive,” Oestmann told the Board of Selectmen at their regular monthly meeting on May 17. “We’re actually going to be using lumber to repair failed sections of the roof.”

The town is retaining the services of KSQ Architects—the same firm that worked on the Town Hall renovation and expansion—for the job. The $120,500 figure covers plans, specifications, administrative fees and $10,500 in contingency.

New Canaan Library Presents First ‘Artist in Residence,’ Architect and Professor Joseph Schott

Joseph Schott, a professor of architecture at Clemson University, said he finds inspiration exploring New Canaan and the surrounding area. With its diverse architecture, the town has become a landmark in the field, according to Schott. “The joy of being an architect is that you can surround yourself with great work but also find it in exotic places,” Schott said. “It turns out New Canaan is one of those exotic places.”

He added: “With the Philip Johnson work, with ‘The River’ at Grace Farms, just all of the great modern work available, we’re going to see more and more people coming from around the world just to see these buildings.”

Schott is the first to exhibit as part of the New Canaan Library’s ‘Artist In Residence’ program with his show titled “Studies in Architecture.” The exhibition itself features Clemson students’ renderings of a future New Canaan Library—a widely anticipated project in town. In addition, Schott is also giving free workshops at the library.

Administrators Formalize New NCHS Student Requirements for Popular ‘Ramstock’ Music Festival

The New Canaan High School Student Coalition and administrators this year formalized a rule requiring that at least one-half of the players in bands participating in an annual music festival be current NCHS students. The rule, now appearing on flyers and informational emails for Ramstock, existed on an ad hoc basis for years. It has opened a rift between some students and teachers, according to NCHS Student Coalition leader Priscilla Schulz. “The participants should go to New Canaan High School,” Schulz said. “I’m sure that those students that are in bands with others not going to the high school don’t like the rule, but I definitely understand why the rule was put in place.”

Advocates for the policy say that Ramstock is meant to showcase the talents and passions of NCHS students only.
