Police Chief: Honor New Canaan’s Fallen Veterans by Wearing a Poppy This Memorial Day

This coming weekend, you will find many New Canaan War Veterans distributing poppies to honor the ultimate sacrifice of our nation’s veterans. Members of our local Veterans of Foreign War Post 653 will provide poppies at several locations. Many Americans overlook the history and significance of the poppy. Poppies have a long history of honoring the dead in both Greek and Roman mythology. However, the significance of the poppy in honoring our nation’s war dead is traced to World War I. Once the war ended, Marines and soldiers brought home the memory of a war-ravaged landscape transformed by wild red poppies, which were as red as the blood shed by the hundreds of thousands of American casualties.

Police Chief: Authentic Military Collection Planned for Memorial Day Weekend; Beware of Scammers

On May 28, Memorial Day, we honor those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our great county. Memorial Day honors their service and sacrifice. Nearly 850 Veterans are buried in Lakeview Cemetery. As Memorial Day approaches, it’s a good time to remind the patriotic citizens of New Canaan to be aware of phony organizations who “solicit” on behalf of Veterans. Recently, Peter Langenus, the Commander of New Canaan’s Veterans of Foreign War Post 653 received a telephone call from a shopper who had been approached for a monetary donation in front of a store in New Canaan.

AUDIO: Tax Scam Targets New Canaan Residents

This past weekend, a New Canaan resident reported receiving an unsolicited telephone call in which a caller claims taxes are past due. This call (click on audio file above) appears to be computer-generated, but other calls may be initiated by live callers. These calls are scams and the caller is not legitimate. IRS contact with taxpayers on a federal tax issue is likely to occur via United States mail. Residents should:

Never give personal information (dates of birth, social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, computer passwords, etc.) to unknown persons over the telephone or electronically.

Winter driving can be hazardous. However, many accidents can be prevented by following the below winter safe driving tips. The three P’s of Safe Winter Driving Are: Prepare for the trip; Protect yourself; and Prevent accidents. Prepare for the trip

Clean Off Your Car: Clean snow and ice off of your car before starting your trip. Have On Hand: Flashlight, jumper cables, abrasive material (sand, kitty litter, even floor mats), shovel, snow brush and ice scraper, warning devices (like flares) and blankets.
