‘There’s Not Enough Being Done’: New Canaan Scout, 15, Oversees Cleaning of Veterans’ Gravestones at Lakeview Cemetery

Elliott Ruoff, a 15-year-old soon-to-be sophomore at New Canaan High School, wanted to do something special for veterans for his Eagle Scout project. Standing near one veteran’s marker on a recent, hot and humid morning at Lakeview Cemetery, Ruoff gave his reasons for taking on the cleaning all of the veterans’ gravestones there. “There’s not enough being done to help them, in my opinion,” Ruoff said. “One of the main problems with this is that when we’re trying to find the stones, we can never find them because some of them are just so dirty that they’re unreadable.”

There are about 900 veterans buried in Lakeview Cemetery, according to Ruoff. Troop 70, the Boy Scouts troop to which he belongs, is responsible for marking those veterans’ stones with U.S. flags for Memorial Day and wreaths for Christmas every year.

New Sod To Be Installed at Athletic Fields in New Canaan

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved a contract to install new sod at athletic fields in New Canaan. The new sod will replace areas of worn sod on fields on the New Canaan High School campus alongside Farm Road, as well as Conner and Saxe. The work will be done by Athletic Field Services, LLC, a company based out of Bridgeport that focuses on installing and upholding fields. It will cost up to $12,705 to complete the project, which will be funded by fees paid to the town by local athletic leagues, officials said. _______________________________________________

Good2Gourmet on Vitti Street Closes After One Year

Good2Gourmet, the prepared meal business located on Vitti Street, closed at the end of last week. The store offered a broad range of fresh food choices aimed to meet everyone’s needs—however, according to Lisa Strupp, an owner of Good2Gourmet, “Ultimately, we were not able to grow the business to a size that made sense for our initial vision.”

Available by pick up and delivery, the store’s offerings ranged from children’s meals to ready-to-go entrees that included vegan and gluten-free options. _______________________________________________

“We were disappointed to hear that Good2Gourmet was closing, it really was a unique offering for families in New Canaan,” said Laura Budd of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. “They had delivery service as well as a wide variety of food.
