Update 9:25 a.m. Sunday

Officials with the state Department of Emergency Management say a total of 16 inches of snow fell in New Canaan.

Downtown streets and primary roads (Rte. 123, Oenoke Ridge, Ponus Ridge) are well-plowed as crews worked through the night. Secondary and tertiary roads are still being worked on Sunday morning.

Officials say a two-vehicle accident on Route 123 in New Canaan has sent one person to the hospital.

The New Canaan Fire Department, New Canaan Police Department and New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the accident in the midst of this snow storm, at 2:07 p.m. near the intersection of Michigan Road.

The extent of the individual’s injuries is not yet known, and it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the accident. Officials continue to urge motorists to stay home unless it’s absolutely necessary to go out.

The National Weather Service now is calling for up to 18 inches of snow.

Original Story

A blizzard delivered what amounts to New Canaan’s first real snowfall of the winter overnight, rapidly blanketing the town in a weather system that the National Weather Service says could deliver up to 14 inches of the white stuff on Saturday alone.

Officials are urging residents to stay parked off street at home and to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. A “blizzard warning” from the NWS is in effect through 7 a.m. Sunday. The weather service says New Canaan could get seven to 11 inches of snow during the day Saturday and up to three more inches at night, and it’s blowing sideways with gusts up to 34 mph.

Eversource reported no outages in New Canaan as of 10 a.m. A passerby had reported a structure fire shortly after 10 a.m. at Park Place and Fairty Drive but responding units found no such problem.

Metro-North Railroad was reporting “Good Service” on the New Canaan Branch as of 10:30 a.m.

  1. A big thank you to New Canaan DPW crew and Mose. We definitely have one of the best DPW’S in CT. When you see the orange trucks come through, give them a honk and wave. They have been plowing most of the night and will keep going to keep our roads safe and clear.

  2. Wouldn’t it be great if those expensive sidewalks were actually cleared. I tried to walk down cherry street on Monday but the sidewalks were mostly impassable. How about fining those who fail to clear the sidewalk!
