New Canaan Library To Reopen Next Week as Flood Remediation Continues

Closed since Sunday after a mechanical problem caused flooding, New Canaan Library is on track to reopen next week, officials say. The library will remain closed through Feb. 25 “due to ongoing flood-remediation measures,” the organization said in a press release. All programs and meetings scheduled for this week are canceled.

“The cleanup team, led by ServiceMaster, has been working all weekend to extract any remaining water which flooded a good portion of the floor on the main level of the Library building this past Saturday due to a leak in the fire sprinkler system,” the press release said. “As of today, most of the carpeting has been dried out and multiple industrial fans have been installed throughout the building to reduce humidity to appropriate levels.”

Senior staff members say members of the library team rescued all books in the Children’s Room and concourse area.

Animal Cruelty Warrant: Dog Left Alone without Adequate Food, Water or Shelter ‘For Multiple Days’

Authorities on Feb. 7 charged a New Canaan man with cruelty to animals because his dog was left outside for multiple days without proper food, water or shelter, according to a police officer’s affidavit in an arrest warrant application.

Jack Hawkins, 47, of New Norwalk Road, already had been warned by authorities in November, following a similar barking dog complaint, that it’s against the law to leave a dog alone for multiple days without proper food and water and with no protection from the weather, according to the affidavit of New Canaan Police Officer Owen Ochs, obtained Tuesday by NewCanaanite.com through a public records request (viewable here in full as PDF). According to the affidavit, the officer at about 8:08 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 was dispatched to Hawkins’s home at 613 New Norwalk Road “on the report of a dog that has been barking for the past two days.”

Arriving, the officer “observed a black and white colored, female border collie dog lying on the front grass,” the affidavit said. “The house was dark and no vehicles were located in the driveway.

New Canaan Fire Marshal: Exit Drills in the Home or ‘EDITH’

Home fires can become a disaster if you and your family are not familiar with how to escape during an emergency. The first step is to design a fire escape plan:

Sketch a floor plan of your home, indicate on the plan doors and windows from which you can escape from each room. Identify at least 2 ways out of every room. Designate a meeting place outside of the home where family members should meet once they have safely escaped. Practice your fire escape plan; regular exit drills in the home will allow you to test the plan and make adjustments as needed.
