New Canaan Police last week arrested an 18-year-old Riverside man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 9:43 p.m. that Wednesday night, officers responded to a two-car crash at New Norwalk Road and Locust Avenue, according to a police report.

While speaking to the teen driver, officers smelled alcohol on his breath, the report said.

After administering field sobriety tests, police brought the misdemeanor DUI charge. The driver additionally was cited for following too closely, the report said.

At police headquarters, he provided two breath samples that established his blood alcohol level at .063 and .055, the report said. Under state law, it’s illegal to drive while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug or both, or (2) while such person has an elevated blood alcohol content.”

The teen was released on $300 bond and scheduled to appear Sept. 3 in state Superior Court.
