New Canaanites:

For years the League of Women Voters has sponsored candidate debates and brought candidates before the public to hear their positions on issues important to the voters. It has been drawn to our attention that with no debates scheduled this year in New Canaan they are sorely missed. We consider this a compliment to our past efforts to provide an opportunity for the public and candidates to meet one another.   This year will be different with other options to hear the candidates.  With the recent re-structuring of voting districts, New Canaan has ended up with 6 voting districts.  The logistics of organizing separate debates is an unwieldy task for one LWV to undertake, therefore we opted to skip running our own debate this year. Since Greenwich, Wilton and Westport LWVs have organized debates, we invite each of you to connect into those debates.

In addition, LWVCT has prepared a comprehensive voters guide which is updated with current voter information—candidates’ backgrounds, election positions, answers to questions posed to the candidates. www.vote411.org/connecticut

Though not organizing debates this election season, we have indeed been active with a new focus on our youth initiatives.  Two very successful efforts have been developed:  Non-partisan Clubs have been formed at the High School and St. Lukes and the students have registered new voters at the schools, the Sidewalk Sale in July, and downtown registration sites.  These new efforts are attracting youth who are interested in learning about the structure of government and becoming more educated voters.  We invite everyone to join our new focus.
