Police on Tuesday afternoon arrested a 30-year-old man by warrant and charged him with failure to register as sex offender.
Officers took custody of the man at Main and Cherry Streets at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to a police report.
Police had obtained a warrant after they “became familiar” with him “through other New Canaan Police incidents he was involved with,” the report said. It did not provide details of those incidents.
Police discovered that the man was registered as a sex offender in New York state. He had been convicted in 2019 of the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl the prior year, according to the New York Sex Offender Registry.
The man gave local police an address of 81 Elm St., the same street number as Le Pain Quotidien.
He’s listed as “homeless” in the New York Sex Offender Registry. He is listed as “risk level 2,” which is “moderate risk to repeat offense.”
Police held him overnight on $20,000 bond and scheduled him to appear Wednesday in state Superior Court.
