New Canaan Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, Feb. 24 the district announced.

UPDATE 1 p.m. Monday

New Canaan had 75 customers without power as of 1 p.m. Monday, according to Eversource.

As of about 10:30 a.m., the utility company’s crews had restored power to 86 New Canaan homes, according to the town’s director of emergency management, Russ Kimes.

Walter Stewart’s opened at 11 a.m. Monday and will stay open until 7:30 p.m. Stewart’s Wine & Spirits also is open until 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Municipal crews are clearing New Canaan roads “and need your help by staying off the roads today and tonight,” Kimes said in a townwide outcall.

“And by removing park vehicles from roadways and municipal parking lots,” he said.

The National Weather Service is calling for snow to slow down after 4 p.m. after getting up to seven inches of snow on Monday.

Tuesday is forecast to be mostly sunny though still below freezing at 31 degrees.

On the heels of a powerful winter storm whose snowfall never fully cleared amid sustained freezing temperatures, New Canaan on Sunday afternoon braced for a blizzard expected to drop another 17 to 24 inches of snow.

New Canaan Public Schools, New Canaan Library, New Canaan YMCA and Town Hall all will be closed Monday. The National Weather Service has put New Canaan, along with the rest of southern Fairfield County and other parts of the region, under a Blizzard Warning through 6 p.m. Monday. 

The Weather Service is calling for wind gusts as high as 60 mph and “whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.”

The warning continued: “The damaging winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be very difficult  to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.”

The heaviest snow and strongest winds are expected overnight into Monday.

New Canaan Director of Emergency Management Russ Kimes in a townwide outcall called for residents’ help “by keeping off the roads unless it is a true emergency during the snowstorm, as well as removing parked cars from roadways and municipal parking lots where possible.”

New Canaan Library and the New Canaan YMCA both closed at 3 p.m. Sunday as snowfall started to accumulate.
