Myles was born in Brockton, MA to Myles and Irene Dempsey on May 16th, 1935. He attended Brockton High School where he played for the 1952 Massachusetts State Championship Golf Team.
Following the untimely passing of his father in 1954, he moved with his mother and brother to Los Angeles, CA where his sister Madolyn lived and while there attended Loyola University. At Loyola he majored in history and played on the golf team, graduating in 1957. He then earned a Masters in History from Boston College in 1959. Myles met his future wife, Jane Anne Ollinger of Ozone Park, NY while at Boston College and they were married in 1959. During this time period he also served in the Massachusetts National Guard.
After working first as a high-school teacher in Bangor, Maine and then as a regional manager at Household Finance Corporation, Myles enjoyed a successful business career at Union Carbide Corporation from 1964-1977 where he travelled extensively in Europe and South America, often bringing Jane along with him. The family moved several times, living in Chicago, New Jersey, San Francisco and Westchester County, NY. He also earned an MBA from Golden Gate College in 1965.
In 1977, at age 42 and with five school-age children, Myles left behind the security of his corporate career and seized the opportunity to purchase County Welding Products, a small distributor of welding supplies and industrial gases located in White Plains, NY. Over the course of the next 33 years he built the business (later renamed as Tech Air) into a powerhouse in the gases and welding industry with five locations in New York and Connecticut and nearly 100 employees.
Myles retired from active management of Tech Air in 2010 at age 75 when the company was sold to private investors, but continued to own and manage a spin-off business in Canaan, CT called Gas Pro along with a long-time employee Marty Banko. He remained an active investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist until his passing.
Along with his wife Jane, Myles was an enthusiastic supporter of the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, CT and Montefiore Einstein in Bronx, NY, where they co-sponsored the Jane A. and Myles P. Dempsey Cancer Research Laboratories at Montefiore-Einstein. Before his passing, he pledged an additional sum to support the ongoing work of the Dempsey Blood Cancer Initiative at Montefiore Einstein over the next 4 years. This work is aimed at the development of novel blood cancer therapies.
Myles was pre-deceased by his parents Myles and Irene Dempsey, his siblings Jack and Madolyn and his beloved wife of 60 years, Jane Anne.
He is survived by his five children: Myles P. Dempsey, Jr and his wife Marilyn of Ophelia, VA; Jennifer J. Torre of Woodbury, CT; Rosemary I. Dahlman and her husband Craig of Stamford, CT; Katherine A. Schonborg and her husband David of Bethel, CT; Kelly H. Connolly and her husband Mark of Bonita Springs, FL; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and his nephew Michael Cavell of Prairie Village, KS.
