New Canaan DPW: Update on Roadworks, Closures

What follows is an update on local roadwork and other infrastructure projects from the New Canaan Department of Public Works.

Ponus Ridge Bridge Closure: The Bridge on Ponus Ridge at Collins Pond is under construction. THE ROAD IS CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC. Motorists must use the posted detours. The closure shall be in effect until mid-December. Clearview Lane and Ponus Ridge House #s 1328 – 1510 can be accessed from the South via Ponus Ridge past Greenley Road. Access to Toby’s Lane, Rippowam Road and Ponus Ridge House #s 1528 and Above must follow the detour and access from the north via Dans Highway.

Road Resurfacing/Repaving: 

Our initial round of Road Resurfacing Projects which included Mill and Pave, Cracksealing, Cape Sealing and Micro-Thin Overlays have been completed. Harrison Avenue and Upper Main Street (Maple to Cherry Streets) as well as the roads currently under construction for other infrastructure projects (water, gas and electric installations) are planned to be repaved beginning on or around September 15, 2023 or when available post-installation. Please contact the DPW at (203) 594-3054 for specific questions on the maintenance and upkeep of our road system.

Sidewalk Installation:

Sidewalk installation has halted on Oenoke Ridge/Main Street (Rte. 124) from Oenoke Lane to Heritage Hill for the next several weeks. Work shall resume shortly and continue thru to completion.

Sidewalk replacement has begun on Elm Street from Park Street to the Train Station entrance (and beyond.) Work shall take approximately 3 weeks. Alternating one-way traffic will be in effect or a short lane closure which will be determined based upon safety of the motoring public and the work zone.

Sidewalk construction is scheduled to begin on Richmond Hill Road (from the Mead Park Exit to Marshal Ridge) on or around 8/16/23. Work on the portion crossing the railroad shall be performed initially in order to capitalize on the railroad closure.

Aquarion Water Main Update:

Lakeview Avenue: Main installation is complete. Work is slated to be completed (including service tie-ins by mid-August.) Road closures should be expected. Local Traffic and Emergency Vehicles will have access.

Orchard Drive: Main installation has been completed. Work is slated to be completed (including service tie-ins by mid-August.) Road closures should be expected. Local Traffic and Emergency Vehicles will have access.

Weed Street: Dunning Road to West Road: Main installation has been completed. Work is slated to be completed (including service tie-ins by mid-September.) Road closures should be expected. Local Traffic and Emergency Vehicles will have access.

West Road: Sunset Hill Road to Greenley Road: David Tinker Excavating is continuing to replace water mains on Weed Street from Dunning to West Road. Work is slated to be completed (including service tie-ins by mid-September.) Daily road closures should be expected. Local Traffic and Emergency Vehicles will have access.

Aquarion 36” Water Transmission Line Update:

School in Summer Recess, July to September:

  • Burns Construction will be installing a 36” Water Transmission Line followed by a gas main in Little Brook Road proceeding from New Norwalk Road to Clapboard Hill Road. The road will be closed to traffic. Local Traffic should use posted detours. 

NOTE: Little Brook Road (from Clapboard Hill to the entrance of East School) will be closed to ALL traffic for approximately 1 week beginning on or around 7/31/23. Access to Rte.106/Silvermine Road from Clapboard Hill will be maintained and East School can be accessed via Rte. 123/New Norwalk Road. 

  • Burns will also be installing the 36” Water Transmission Line followed by gas main in CT-106/Silvermine Road heading northeast towards Carter Street from Little Brook Road. Local residents with homes on the detour, emergency vehicles, and school buses will have access through the detour at all times.

School in Session, September to December:

  • Work along Little Brook Road will be complete – including crossing the intersection of Little Brook/Clapboard Hill/CT-106. 
  • Work will continue progressing towards Valley Road operating under the posted detours. Eastbound thru traffic on CT-106/Silvermine Road will be permitted to access Clapboard Hill/Little Brook. Local residents with homes on the detour, emergency vehicles, and school buses will have access through the detour at all times.

Eversource Gas Installation Update: 

Work on several individual services will be performed on an as-needed basis. Any major work in the downtown will be scheduled at night.

Eversource Electric Installation Update:

Eversource will continue work preparing for an electrical upgrade to the downtown area. Work on the vaults on Elm Street, Park Street, Forest Street and Main Street will be performed after the sidewalk sale (July 21 and 22.)

  1. Re Aquarion Water Main Update on West Rd: It appears from the pavement cuts that the project will be moving down Greenley Rd shortly, which will require it to be closed. It is currently part of the detour route for the Ponus Rd closure for bridge replacement. Greenley residents would appreciate an update as to timing and duration of that part of the project.
