The New Canaan Men’s Club Friday will learn at this week’s meeting how maintaining health and fitness is bound to enjoying an active lifestyle while aging. The guest speaker is David Montieth, past world champion in the high jump for men in the 70 to 74-year age group, having won the title at the World Championship Master’s Track and Field meet in Perth, Australia.
The meeting, at Morrill Hall in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, will begin at 10 a.m. with Montieth’s remarks scheduled for around 10:40 a.m.
A frequent winner in high events for his age category, he has been ranked number one in the world in six of the last 17 years and has won 31 U.S. national championships during that period.
He currently holds both the U.S. indoor and outdoor high jump records in the 70 to 74 age group and was named “Athlete of the Year” by the National USA Track and Field organization for that age group. Among all high jumpers who have ever competed at age 70 or older, only 2 men in the world have jumped higher than David.
While David high jumped throughout his four years at Wabash College he did not jump again until he was almost 60 years old when he realized he had to take better care of his body.
