NCHS ‘SLOBs’ Plan First Meeting
Saturday, September, 20, 2014 @ 2:00 am - 3:00 pm
The Service League of Boys (SLOBs) will hold its first general meeting of the school year on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 2pm, in the New Canaan High School cafeteria. The club works to foster the parent-son relationship in a philanthropic organization committed to community service and leadership development. Our first speaker will be Mike Evans, NCHS Varsity Boy’s Basketball Coach, who will talk about his charity Full Court Peace that seeks to connect communities through basketball.
SLOBs members have served over 23,000 hours since the organization’s inception in 2004 in a wide variety of projects in New Canaan and surrounding communities. Some of the organizations and events in which the boys volunteer their time include the Cardinal Sheehan Center in Bridgeport, Center for Hope, New Canaan Food Pantry, Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Strays and Others, and the Red Cross. They also help at the annual Mikey Czech Foundation’s Miles For Mikey 5KWalk/Run, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Race/Walk, the New Canaan Nature Center Fall Fair and the St. Mark’s annual May Fair.
Membership is open to New Canaan High School boys in grades nine through 11. Boys interested in joining should attend the new members meeting on Monday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. in NCHS cafeteria. Boys are required to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours and attend general membership meetings four times throughout the school year. The student must sign up with a parent and parents are required to volunteer five hours and attend three meetings per year.
SLOBs can earn service hours at the first meeting by donating gently used sneakers to Full Court Peace. In addition, members can help with the NCHS Fall Beautification Project by donating and planting a mum at the main entrance of the school at 1 p.m.
