Halloween decorations, inflatable displays, animated figures, fog machines, and decorative lighting can make the holiday memorable. However, improper installation or use can create electrical hazards. Outdoor equipment may be exposed to rain and damp conditions, and cords across walkways can pose tripping risks for residents and trick-or-treaters. The New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office urges residents to make electrical safety part of their Halloween plans.
Use GFCI Protection Outdoors
Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection helps reduce the risk of electrical shock by interrupting power when an imbalance is detected. Use GFCI-protected outlets or a properly rated GFCI cord set for outdoor decorations. Test GFCI devices before use, and ensure outdoor receptacles and covers are suitable for the weather and location.
Choose and Inspect Extension Cords
- Use extension cords rated for outdoor use when powering outdoor decorations.
- Inspect cords and plugs for fraying, exposed wires, cracks, or other damage. Remove damaged cords from service; never patch them with electrical tape.
- Do not use cords with missing or damaged grounding prongs, and route cords away from doorways, sidewalks, and other walking areas.
Use Approved Products and Avoid Overloads
Choose lights and electrical decorations listed by a qualified testing laboratory, such as UL or ETL, and approved for their intended use, especially outdoors. Check decorations and cords before installation, stop using items that operate abnormally, avoid overloading circuits, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Protect electrical connections from moisture using equipment and covers rated for the conditions.
Public Safety Summary
Before switching on Halloween decorations: use outdoor GFCI protection, inspect cords, keep connections protected from moisture, move cords away from walkways, choose products approved for their intended use, and remove damaged equipment from service.
