New Canaan Man, 60, Charged with Evading

A 60-year-old New Canaan man was arrested Jan. 18 by warrant and charged with evading responsibility.

The warrant stemmed from a car crash reported to police Dec. 21.

Police cited a section of the Connecticut General Statutes that addresses accidents causing physical injury. Under state law, drivers who are “knowingly involved in an accident which causes serious physical injury” must stop immediately “and render such assistance as may be needed and shall give such operator’s name, address and operator’s license number and registration number to the person injured or to any officer or witness to the serious physical injury to person.” If the driver cannot do that, he or she must report the crash to an officer of the law and file a report, under the statute.

In this case, the man also was cited for failure to drive right.

He turned himself in to police at about 5 p.m. The man was released on $300 bond and scheduled to appear Feb. 1 in state Superior Court.
