In 2025, women made up 57% of college graduates. Yet, despite representing half of the population and possessing the education to pursue leadership roles, women make up only 28% of Congress and just 11% of Fortune 500 CEOs.
These were the statistics shared with me during my first conversation with LiveGirl Founder Sheri West. To fully understand the mission of LiveGirl, it’s important to first recognize the need to support women and girls especially at this moment in history.
I had the opportunity to intern at LiveGirl through the New Canaan High School Senior Internship Program. During my time working with LiveGirl, I had the opportunity to represent the organization at grant receptions for the New Canaan Community Foundation and the New Canaan Rotary Club. Each time I introduced myself and mentioned LiveGirl, I was met with glowing responses, praising the program. To me, that speaks volumes about the impact LiveGirl has had on the New Canaan community. To me, these events also showed the strength of the nonprofit community uplifting New Canaan.
Growing up in New Canaan, there’s an unspoken rule not to stand out. Especially as a middle school girl, I felt pressure to look the same, act the same, and share the same interests. LiveGirl’s programs, such as Confidence Club and She Cares, target the insecurity that builds during this time and remind young girls not only to be proud of their differences but to embrace them. Programs like Camp LiveGirl bring girls together from across Fairfield County, a unique opportunity to learn that what connects us is stronger than our differences. SHE WORKS provides vital career readiness and internships to help young women launch into the workforce, especially important as many companies eliminate their Women’s Resource Groups and college grads experience one of the toughest job markets ever. LiveGirl also distributes scholarships and hosts community events that foster networking and confidence-building.
Overall, LiveGirl is an incredible organization dedicated to building confident and inclusive young leaders, so that all girls can succeed and make a positive impact on the world. At a time when diversity is being challenged and traditional gender roles are being reinforced, organizations like LiveGirl are more important than ever. They serve as a reminder to girls from all backgrounds that they are smart, strong, and special.
