A 27-year-old Lakeview Avenue resident has been identified as the individual who stole an iPad as well as five credit cards (using four) nearly two months ago from a New Canaan home.

The woman is accused of spending about $3,500 between March 7 and 20 at Home Depots, gas stations, pharmacies and Metro-North stations throughout Fairfield County.

Police arrested the woman by warrant at 12:30 p.m. on May 7, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.

Ultimately identified by video surveillance at Home Depots in Norwalk and Fairifeld (among the cards she stole was a Home Depot credit card), the arrested woman is the daughter of the victim’s babysitter, police said. The victim immediately identified the woman, police said, based on the video which showed her to be a white female with long brown hair.

The original complaint—first reported here on NewCanaanite.com—came in March 22 from a 46-year-old Gerdes Road man and his wife, police said.

The stolen cards included the Home Depot cards, two MasterCards and a Visa, as well as something called an “applied bank card,” Ogrinc said, citing a police report.

It isn’t clear what happened with the iPad. Some of the places where the credit cards were used include Home Depots in Norwalk and Fairfield ($1,362.17 total), Stop & Shop in Darien as well as Bronxville, N.Y., CVS in New Canaan and Norwalk, Walgreens in Danbury and Norwalk, Exxon Mobil in Westport and Metro-North Railroad station in Darien, police said.

The woman was charged with five counts of credit card theft, illegal use of credit cards and fifth-degree larceny. She was released after promising to appear May 20 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
