Eversource: New Canaan Residents Can Influence Natural Gas Expansion Plan In Out Years

Following an initial roll-out of natural gas in New Canaan through 2020—a three-phase project starting next year that will see a trunk line come into town from Stamford, up South Avenue to the business district and then out to East School, with nearby residences along the way—property owners themselves can influence just where the utility brings natural gas, officials say. For Eversource—at least through 2024, under a state-backed expansion plan—the question of where in New Canaan the gas lines will go is in some ways a math equation, according to John Ferrelli, the company’s Waterbury-based supervisor of business account services: The cost of installation must be offset by the load delivered. “Customer demand will dictate the path of opportunity beyond the initial outline, as well as new construction and conversions,” Ferrelli told members of the Town Council at their regular meeting. “Future growth potential will be driven by customer interest, customer demand,” Ferrelli said at the July 19 meeting, held at Town Hall. “And that’s where the company will look to expand [starting in 2020].

Country Club of New Canaan Cited for Wetlands Violations

The Country Club of New Canaan has been cited for violations of regulations that are designed to protect some of the town’s most sensitive environmental habitat. According to a citation issued Jan. 6 by the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses department staff, the Country Club without a required permit has conducted “a significant amount of earth disturbing activities around and over wetlands.”

Those activities include removing trees and vegetation from known wetlands and adjacent areas and creating silted water by disturbing a utility road with tree equipment trucks. “These activities have disturbed the wetlands and watercourse that are protected under the regulations,” according to a citation notice obtained by NewCanaanite.com following a formal request. “Minimal soil and erosion controls were installed.”

Town officials learned of the violations from a third-party observer and inspected the site on Jan.

FCSL Summer Swimming Round-Up: Country Club of New Canaan and New Canaan Field Club

Featuring the perfect blend of competitiveness and fun, the Fairfield County Swim League – which includes swimmers from under age 8 to age 17 – is a gem of the summer. Both the Country Club of New Canaan and the New Canaan Field Club recently wrapped up their dual meet seasons and are preparing for divisionals and county championships. With a 1-4 record in Division 4, Country Club of New Canaan’s first year head coach Eileen Loveless said the amount of young swimmers – specifically in the age 8 to 10 and underage groups – shows that they are “starting to build our team back up again.”

Because the team is building from these young age groups, Loveless says she enjoys seeing the growth of her swimmers over the course of the season. Following a tough first loss to Greenwich Water Club, Loveless noted extremely “positive meet experiences” with both Shorehaven and Paterson Clubs because they were competitive, and the progress of CCNC swimmers was evident in the abundance of best times. “They were the most exciting meets for us because it’s where Country Club of New Canaan really rallied our spirit, where our team came together and our joy and enthusiasm seemed to reach its height,” Loveless said.

Teen Arrested After Late-Night Fight in Country Club Parking Lot

Police after midnight on Saturday arrested an 18-year-old Stamford man following a reported fight in the parking lot at the Country Club of New Canaan. Officers were dispatched to the club at about 12:15 a.m. on June 18 on a report of a possible fight in progress, according to a police report. There, at about 12:43 a.m. they arrested the teen following an investigation, charging him with first-degree reckless endangerment and disregarding an officer’s signal. It isn’t clear with whom the Stamford man had been fighting, what prompted it or whether any of those involved are connected to the country club. The arrested man was released on $500 bond and scheduled to appear June 28 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

In the days prior to hitting a hole-in-one on the 174-yard seventh at the Country Club of New Canaan a few weeks back, John Polera had told his friends what a nice job he thought Chevrolet had done with their Corvette Stingrays and that one day he’d like to own one. It so happened that on Monday, May 18, Polera was part of a foursome playing in a fundraiser for the Waveny LifeCare Network, where the special prize on that par-3 hole was a new, black Stingray. “After I struck the ball [with the six iron], I saw it was going right toward the flag and I said to myself, ‘This could be a pretty good shot,’ thinking it would be close,” Polera, an attorney from Armonk, N.Y., recalled Friday afternoon from the showroom floor at Karl Chevrolet on Elm Street, his friend, professional client and fellow member of that foursome Jim Darling standing nearby. “And it landed on the green, took one bounce and rolled right into the middle of the cup.
