Local Businesses and COVID-19: Gates

For today’s Q&A with a local business owner, we hear from Jay Luther of Gates. The Forest Street mainstay is now open for indoor as well as outdoor dining. Here’s our interview. New Canaanite: Gates, and other local restaurants, had been compelled for months to offer food on a pickup or delivery basis only, and now we are seeing those restrictions start to lift in phases. What has this all been like for you at Gates and how are you faring?

Jay Luther: We’ve been blessed with support from everyone – our customers, the Chamber, landlord and vendors. We’re all in this together and the support has been remarkable. Chef Luis [Lopez] worked over 70 days straight and carried us through curbside pickup and delivery to bring food to New Canaan families as well as our local first responder heroes.

Local Businesses and COVID-19: Salon 5 East

For today’s Q&A with a local business owner, we hear from Toni Esposito of Salon 5 East. The East Avenue salon recently was allowed to reopen, as per the state.

Here’s our exchange.

You got the green light to open recently after weeks of forced closure, as per the governor’s order. How are you doing? Toni Esposito: Since getting the green light to open, we have been doing well. We are committed to providing a safe and clean environment for our staff and our clients.

Local Organizations and COVID-19: Carriage Barn Arts Center

For today’s Q&A with a local nonprofit organization, we hear from Hilary Wittmann, executive director of Carriage Barn Arts Center. Here’s our exchange. New Canaanite: Many of our local nonprofit organizations have missed out on major spring fundraisers due to the health-related restrictions that followed COVID-19 virus. How is Carriage Barn Arts Center faring and what sort of impact is the public health emergency having on the organization? Hilary Wittmann: It’s been incredibly disappointing that the gallery has been closed this spring and so many exhibits, special events and concerts couldn’t take place. There have been some silver linings though, as we transitioned to sharing our exhibits virtually.
