New Canaan Woman Launches ‘Intentional Self Aesthetics’ on Vitti Street

New Canaan resident Dr. Teresa Alasio had already worked in a wide range of positions within the medical field when the pandemic hit in 2020, prompting her to take on a new professional challenge. A New Jersey native who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in anthropology from Rutgers, Alasio finished her post-bacc pre-med work at Columbia and then entered the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, taking her medical degree in 1999. 

She started an internship in general surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, then returned to Mount Sinai when she switched to anatomic and clinical pathology, finishing in 2004. Over the next two decades, she worked in fine needle aspiration biopsy during a fellowship in cytopathology at New York University, as an academic assistant professor and assistant program director of the residency program at SUNY Downstate Health Services University, at a reference laboratory in Westchester County, N.Y., then set up a biopsy clinic and, finally, was hired as medical director and chair of pathology for CareMount Medical. “After the pandemic, I left my position at CareMount for lots of different reasons, one of which was that I wanted to stay closer to home and I wanted to do something that was more locally based,” Alasio recalled Monday afternoon from the office of her own newly established business, Intentional Self Aesthetics on Vitti Street. Board of Ed Divided on Best Calendar for 2025-26 School Year

District officials are trying to figure out the most sensible way to build more wiggle room into the proposed 2025-26 school year schedule. As a proposed calendar now before the Board of Education has it, that school year would start on a Thursday in August and end on a Thursday the following June, meaning the final week of school could absorb just one snow day before threatening to push the academic year into the following week. However, the district by its own policy doesn’t push the school year beyond the third full week of June. “So there’s different things that are conspiring against us here for that start date,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi said during the Board’s regular meeting, held Dec. 4 in the Wagner Room at New Canaan High School. 

The ‘25-’26 school year is already an anomaly in that several months will see a reduction in the number of school days just because of how the holidays fall.

Pilot Program: Board of Ed Approves Policy for Bringing Certified Therapy Dogs into Schools

The Board of Education during its most recent meeting voted unanimously in favor of a policy designed to oversee a pilot program whereby a certified therapy dog can visit New Canaan Public Schools. Led by a teacher who also is a trainer, the program has already seen a certified therapy dog visit South School once “and it was a big hit,” according to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi. 

“And not only was it a big hit, it was a big dog—it’s a Newfoundland, hard to miss,” Luizzi said during the Board’s regular meeting, held Nov. 20 in the Wagner Room at New Canaan High School. “But it was wonderful. The kids loved it.

The Grazing Ram: The Real Problem with Making Columbus Day a Holiday

The Board of Education last month voted not only to make Columbus Day a holiday but also to extend school by one day in the summer. This decision is detrimental to students and also demonstrates a broader issue in the Board—namely, that its members are putting personal political interests above the general interests of the student body and town. It’s obvious why taking away a day in October is extremely detrimental to learning. As school is starting up, having every day that we can in school is extremely important. In early October classes start to get into the rhythm and large projects, assignments and tests are assigned.

Board of Ed Poised To Remove ‘DEI’ from School District’s Goals and Objectives

In a series of proposed changes that has generated wide community discussion, the Board of Education is poised this week to replace language around diversity, equity and inclusion or “DEI” in the school district’s goals. Board members agreed at their most recent meeting that the following sentences rightly should be added to a draft version of the goals that the elected body has been discussing since July:
NCPS [New Canaan Public Schools] will strive to deepen students’ understanding of a range of differences among people. NCPS will work to foster empathy and respect for all and to celebrate the unique and varied contributions each of us makes. Yet the Board of Ed is divided on a third proposed sentence for the goals:
In this regard, NCPS will seek independent expertise, research and develop next steps to advance this initiative. Four Board members—Secretary Dan Bennett, Julie Toal, Hugo Alves and Phil Hogan—objected to the word ‘expertise,’ saying they were against hiring an outside consultant to assess New Canaan Public Schools and make recommendations. 

They stopped short of saying that New Canaan’s lack of diversity is not a problem for the public schools.
