Letter: First Selectman Candidate Kevin Moynihan ‘the Right Person’ to Face New Canaan’s Budgeting, Managerial Challenges

The role of First Selectman becomes more demanding every year and requires a combination of financial, legal and managerial skills. The Town of New Canaan is a complex business, with a $140 million annual budget and 200 employees. I worked in Town Hall for the past six years and I saw first-hand the budgeting and managerial challenges facing our Town. Kevin Moynihan is the right person to face these challenges. Kevin has 35 years of business experience in the legal profession and he has served as a Member of the Town Council for the last four years.

We’re told that the Board of Education on Monday night voted to request an $87,030,631 operating budget for next fiscal year—some $1.5 million less than the superintendent’s original proposed operating budget (as the town will replenish health insurance reserves for this year). The spending plan requires review and approval from the Boards of Selectmen and Finance, and the Town Council. The school board added $35,000 for club sports financial support.
