Police on July 31 arrested a 46-year-old Torrington man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 4:40 p.m. that Thursday, New Canaan Police received a call about an erratic driving headed toward the downtown on South Avenue, officials said.

Authorities received information that the car had crossed the double-yellow line several times and struck the curb twice, according to a police report.

Police identified the vehicle and conducted a stop at Elm and Park Streets, the report said. There, police smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath, it said.

After conducting field sobriety tests, police arrested the man for DUI as well as drinking while driving.

At headquarters, the man provided breath samples that established his blood-alcohol levels at .1827 and .1757, both more than twice the legal limit.

He was released on $500 bond and scheduled to appear Aug. 13 in state Superior Court.
