Petitioning Candidates for First Selectman, Town Council File Paperwork

Officials confirmed Wednesday that two petition candidates for elected offices in New Canaan filed paperwork ahead of a 4 p.m. deadline in order to get on ballots for the Nov. 3 election. Town Clerk Claudia Weber said she verified 34 qualifying signatures submitted by New Canaan resident Michael Nowacki, who is running for first selectman. Pearl Williams of the Connecticut Secretary of the State confirmed that New Canaan resident Roger Williams filed his signed petition for a seat on the Town Council. The signatures now will be forwarded to Weber for verification, Williams said.

We’re hearing that the wonderful New Canaan Beautification League hosted its second annual Mead Park Breakfast on a recent sunny morning, as a way to say ‘Thank You’ to town employees including many DPW crewmen for their support and partnership in making our village lovely throughout the year (see gallery above). The event was held in the colonnade at Mead Park (a popular spot that had been WPA-era children’s wading pool, originally). Recognized at a recent Town Council meeting for its effective local work, the nonprofit organization creates the hanging baskets downtown and manages many of the traffic triangles around New Canaan. “This non-profit organization of volunteers is open to all, whether for social, civic-minded or educational purposes,” league memberts tell us. “No green thumb is necessary.

We’re wishing a speedy recovery for New Canaan First Selectman Rob Mallozzi, who is laid up at home this week—booked already as a vacation week—after spraining his ankle and breaking a lower leg bone (fibula) during a freak accident last weekend. Up in Newport, R.I. with New Canaanites Nick Williams, a second selectman, and Paul Foley, a police commissioner, for the 12-meter sailing races, Mallozzi—who had gone uninjured in eight years as a volunteer firefighter here in town—took a misstep between a sailboat and launch and rolled his ankle. As per Coastal Orthopaedics in Norwalk, the first selectman said he’s got to keep the leg elevated for a full week to prevent swelling and quicken the recovery process, and hopes to be back at work next Tuesday. “Everyone has reached out to me, my wife and family and friends have been wonderful, and as upset as I am, that part of this has made it a little easier,” Mallozzi said on Wednesday. The first selectman was to have taken a real vacation this week, including an Eagles concert, but had to forego it while he recovers at home.

Letter: Creation of ‘New Canaan Taxpayers Association LLC’

Dear Editor,

I am pleased to announce that paperwork has been filed with the Secretary of State Office this week to create the New Canaan Taxpayers Association LLC (NCTA LLC). Look for the NCTA LLC banner and informational table on Saturday, July 18 where a membership drive will commence. A non-voting membership in NCTA LLC will be provided for $20 annually, and a voting membership will cost $40. The purpose of the NCTA LLC is to create a collective lobbying voice for the taxpayers of New Canaan on state, federal and municipal legislative matters. An election of a Board of Directors of the NCTA LLC is planned for late September.
