After her newspaper column “Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone” landed her on NPR, Fox News, and everywhere in between, Lenore wrote Free-Range Kids, the book-turned-movement. She has been profiled in The New Yorker, hosted the reality show “World’s Worst Mom,” and has lectured everywhere from Disney to Microsoft to schools across the country. Created in 2020, the volunteer New Canaan Coalition is organized by New Canaan CARES. In this Q&A, we hear from Stacey Walker, education and program coordinator at CARES, about the Coalition’s efforts in the past year-plus to raise awareness around vaping in this community. 

Here’s our exchange. New Canaanite: New Canaan CARES is hosting a Zoom presentation on vaping at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Before we get into the details, please tell me about this broader initiative through the New Canaan Coalition. What is the Coalition and how did it come to make vaping the centerpiece of its campaign?

This week on 0684-Radi0, our free podcast (subscribe here in the iTunes Store), we talk to Officer Jeff Deak of the New Canaan Police Department and Stacey Walker of New Canaan CARES about vaping, a substance abuse issue that remains a major local health concern, especially as it relates to New Canaan youth. 

Walker since the fall has been leading the New Canaan Coalition, a volunteer group that seeks to educate the community about the dangers of vaping. This Super Bowl weekend, a number of local pizzerias—Dante’s, Joe’s Pizza, Pinocchio Pizza, and Vicolo Pizza & Trattoria—will be using pizza boxes with vaping education messages designed by New Canaan High School students. Other local businesses that will feature NCHS students’ anti-vaping stickers on their cups and takeout bags include Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee, Club Sandwich, New Canaan Chicken, Tony’s Deli and Connecticut Sandwich Co.
