New Canaan Falls to Trinity Catholic

By Terry Dinan

STAMFORD – Many high school basketball coaches would be hard-pressed to find positives after losing a game by 13 points. That said, New Canaan’s Mike Evans was able to remain optimistic after watching his Rams fall 61-48 on the road against a tough Trinity Catholic squad Friday night. “When we execute our zone defense, we’re pretty good,” said Evans. “But it’s really hard to consistently get back into it against such a high-intensity team. They’re well coached and they read zones really well.

By Terry Dinan

NEW CANAAN – Today is National Signing Day for NCAA football programs, and an impressive number of New Canaan High School’s Class of 2014 will be continuing their gridiron careers at the next level. Most notable on the list are the four outgoing captains. Defensive lineman Connor Buck will be bringing his considerable talents to Colgate University. Joao Rocha will be providing protection on the offensive line for former Rams teammate Matt Milano at Middlebury. Linebacker Cole Harris will remain a Ram, as he will play for AFCA Regional Coach of the Year Joe Moorhead at Fordham University.

New Canaan Football Named to MaxPreps Tour of Champions

By Terry Dinan

NEW CANAAN – The 2013 FCIAC and State Champion New Canaan Rams football team added yet another title, as they were named to the 9th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions. The honor is an exclusive one, as only 50 teams were invited to the Tour out of almost 17,000 participants throughout the country. In order to qualify, teams had to be both nationally ranked and state champions. New Canaan’s 44-12 win over Darien in the Class L title game gave the Rams a measure of payback against the only team to have defeated them this season. It also re-affirmed the 2013 squad’s status as the most-dominant team in the state, and perhaps in school history.

New Canaan Basketball Tops Staples

By Terry Dinan

NEW CANAAN – More than once this season, the New Canaan Rams basketball team has taken a lead early in a game, only to let it slip away. Friday night’s contest against Staples seemed to follow the same script, as a 41-33 fourth quarter advantage dissipated to 41-37 in a matter of minutes. Leave it to a freshman to write a plot twist. A huge three-pointer by 9th Grader Tyler Sweeney gave the Rams some breathing room, propelling them to a 46-40 win over the Wreckers in front of the biggest home crowd of the season. “That was a big shot,” said New Canaan head coach Mike Evans, who saw his team improve to 3-10 (3-8 in the FCIAC) on the season.
