A Meriden woman, 41, has been charged following an investigation into an altercation that occurred after a high school basketball game at New Canaan High School in March.
According to an arrest warrant application filed by the New Canaan Police Department, the woman has been charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct in connection with the March 12 incident.
Police said officers were assigned to the game due to concerns over disruptive spectator behavior. As the game ended, a large number of parents entered the court despite announcements instructing spectators to remain off the playing surface, according to an affidavit filed by Officer Nolan Heintz, signed April 3 by a state Superior Court judge and obtained by NewCanaanite.com.
Officers reported multiple verbal confrontations among parents before separating the groups.
During the aftermath, police encountered an assistant athletic director from Maloney High School who had multiple scratches across his face, including redness and bleeding near his right eye, according to the affidavit. Police said he declined medical treatment at the scene.
Investigators say the woman approached members of the coaching staff during the disturbance. According to the warrant, she later told police the assistant athletic director had grabbed her shirt with both hands, prompting her to respond in self-defense, the arrest warrant said. Her husband supported that account, it said.
The assistant athletic director, however, told investigators the woman’s husband entered the court yelling before the woman grabbed his face with both hands, causing scratches and bleeding. He denied striking or attempting to assault her, stating he kept his hands away while trying to de-escalate the situation.
Police reviewed surveillance footage from the gym, but investigators said the available camera angle did not clearly capture the incident and did not resolve the conflicting accounts.
The investigation continued over several weeks. Police later obtained a signed statement from the assistant athletic director and interviewed an independent witness who reportedly told investigators he saw the woman swipe at the assistant athletic director’s face and did not observe the assistant athletic director place his hands on her.
According to the affidavit, officials from Maloney High School subsequently banned the woman and her husband from attending athletic and extracurricular events after determining they had physically assaulted the assistant athletic director. New Canaan Public Schools also prohibited the couple from attending athletic events in the district.
The woman turned herself in on June 2. According to Connecticut Judicial Branch records, the woman has not yet pleaded and is now scheduled for arraignment July 27. She has retained New Haven-based attorney John A. Ferranti, the records show.
