The long-delayed elevator project at Waveny House remains on track to be completed by the end of summer, according to Public Works Director Tiger Mann.

The elevator contractor is on site working, Mann said, and the town is having the contractor revise a railing based on a discussion held the week before.

“It’s a process,” Mann told the Board of Selectmen during its regular meeting Tuesday morning at Town Hall.

“By the time we get through inspections and everything else, it’ll be operational by the end of the summer,” Mann said.

The comments came during a general Department of Public Works project update to the Board.

The project, which adds a glass elevator alongside the grand staircase in the Waveny House main hall, was discussed for nearly a decade by municipal officials before the town approved a $2.5 million contract for the elevator and an ADA-compliant bathroom in late 2022, following a federal investigation that found the second floor of Waveny House, home to the Recreation Department, was not accessible.

The project was originally supposed to be finished in April, in time for the start of Waveny’s spring wedding season, but was pushed to late summer after a series of manufacturing and electrical issues with the elevator itself.

The delay has caused headaches for months. Parks & Recreation Director John Howe, whose department runs its summer camp programs out of Waveny House on rainy days, has not been able to use the building for that purpose this summer. Weddings already booked at Waveny had to work around the construction, with elevator installers limited to a three-day work week to accommodate weekend events.

The selectmen are requesting further updates on the project.
