Winter Storm—Feb. 13, 2024

New Canaan Public Schools, Town Hall and New Canaan Library will be closed Tuesday due to a winter storm that’s expected to dump six to nine inches of snow on lower Fairfield County towns, officials say.

According to the National Weather Service, winds will gust as high as 40 mph in New Canaan and surrounding towns, and “travel could be very difficult.”

“The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute,” according to the Weather Service. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

Public Works crews could be seen putting salt down on local roads Monday night, while the New Canaan Office of Emergency Management began posting expected snowfall updates to its Facebook page.

The New Canaan YMCA said on its homepage late Monday that it will have a delayed opening of 3 p.m. Tuesday.

All town buildings will be closed Tuesday, according to the town website, except those needed by emergency services.

Businesses that are open Tuesday include Walter Stewart’s Market, Stewarts Spirits and Francos Wine Merchants on Elm Street.

New Canaan Police during snow storms in the past have reminded residents “to remove any snow and ice off their vehicle prior to leaving their residence, take it slow and proceed with caution, leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you and check your tire tread.”
