Donut Crazy could be open at 4 South Ave. by year’s end, and with its exotic and popular creations—seasonal offerings include “crème brulee,” “eggnog,” “fat Elvis” (that’s banana cream center, peanut butter topping with banana slices, bacon and chocolate drizzle and a touch of honey), “cinnamon cider” and “strawberry cheesecake”—is expected to fill a niche in town, owner Christopher Michelini said through a spokesman.

“There is nowhere to get a good doughnut in New Canaan—a fresh, good doughnut,” said Michelini, a New Canaan resident who also builds custom cabinets and wood interiors.

Donut Crazy has locations in Shelton and Stratford, and the shop in New Canaan will start out on a temporary basis by selling freshly made donuts baked off-site, with an eye on making the South Avenue store permanent, officials said.

“Health-conscious food is good for healthy people, doughnuts are good to make people want to be healthy, they enjoy eating them, and then gyms are good for when you feel guilty and want to work it off,” Michelini said through his spokesman.

The early returns from test-marketing the product in New Canaan—including at the Holiday Stroll and at Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee on Pine Street—has been overwhelmingly positive, Michelini said.

“People love them,” he said.

Arnold Karp, who owns the commercial space where Donut Crazy will open, said what he felt was unique about the business “was the many, many different and crazy or outlandish flavors you can get.”

“I never thought a doughnut with bacon would be at the top of my list but people who have had them tell me how good they are,” Karp said.

He added: “We are happy to welcome a new potential tenant into New Canaan and that should help everybody’s sweet tooth.”
