We all know that it is important to have working smoke alarms, an escape plan and designated meeting place in the event of a fire. Did you know that closing your doors also increases the safety in your home?
Closed doors can reduce fire spread, limit damage to your home, keep temperatures down and may even save your life if you become trapped.
- 50% of home fires happen between 11 pm and 7am. Closing the door before going to sleep will help keep you safe.
- A fire needs oxygen to burn. A closed door keeps more oxygen in the room and away from the fire. It can temporarily inhibit the spread of smoke and flames. When you exit a fire, make sure to close the door behind you to slow its growth.
- A closed door can make a 900° temperature difference, it can reduce 1,000° to 100°.
- During a fire a closed door can keep carbon monoxide levels 90% lower than if a door is left open and minimize exposure to harmful chemicals in smoke.
- Because of the rise in the use of synthetic materials, furniture and construction, fire spreads faster than ever before.
- Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly
- Plan Your Escape; Having a fire escape plan for your home is also important to stay safe during a fire. Visit every room in your house with your family and try to have 2 ways out of each room. Decide on a designated meeting spot outside.
