New Canaan Police at 12:34 p.m. on Oct. 12 received a report of a residential burglary on South Avenue. Suspects gained entrance to the house though nothing was reported stolen. Police have no suspects at this time and the investigation is active.

Dr. Christy Lang Hearlson will preach at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan’s 10 a.m. Worship Service on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to promote New Canaan’s Fred Tiani III to chief mechanic in the Department of Public Works. He’s the grandson of former New Canaan Police Chief Fredrick P. Tiani Sr. and son of the late Fredrick Phillip Tiani Jr., who passed last year amid his own career at NCPD. DPW Director Tiger Mann said during the selectmen meeting, “Fred, your dad would be very proud.”

Tickets here for the Playhouse premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 29 of New Canaan High School graduate Theo Avgerinos’s new documentary film, “Rising Hope.” Screenings at 5 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. will be followed by a Q&A with Avgerinos. “Rising Hope” has won multiple awards, including Best Documentary at the LightReel Film Festival in Washington, D.C., and both Audience Award and Best Mississippi Film at the Oxford Film Festival. It tells a powerful story of resilience and hope in the impoverished Mississippi Delta. This special screening is presented by Stand Together Against Racism (S.T.A.R).

Some great Halloween-themed events coming up next weekend:

  • Hocus Pocus,” the New Canaan Mounted Troop’s Halloween Happenings event—free admission, rain or shine—will be held 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. “Parade, Carnival, Silent Auction, Food, Drinks and Bake Sale. Family and friends are welcome to come,” organizers say. “Drinks and Pulled Pork Sandwiches will be available for purchase.” The NCMT is at 22 Carter St.
  • Tickets here for the Second Annual Hallo-Wine Party. Organized on behalf of ABC New Canaan, the party will be held 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Carriage Barn in Waveny. No tickets will be sold at the door. More info here.
  • A family friendly New Canaan tradition—the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Halloween Block Party—returns on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 12 to 2 p.m. on Elm Street. This year’s event is generously sponsored by The Sigg Team at William Raveis and New Canaan Pediatric Dentistry. The Glass House, is presenting “Glass Etudes,” a special concert of piano selections played by Timo Andres, Aaron Diehl and Jenny Lin, to be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20 in a landmark Modernist building, the First Presbyterian Church or “Fish Church” at 1101 Bedford St. in Stamford. The concert ($75 per person, $40 students) is presented in partnership with the Highland Green Foundation.

The selectmen on Tuesday made two appointments to the town’s Blight Review Board: Marcella Rand (Human Services Department) and Chris Hering (Planning & Zoning Commission) and also reappointed Michael “Hammer Mike” Chen to the Board of Finance.

New Canaan Leaf Pick-Up

The town will start picking up leaves (that have been raked to the curbside by homeowners) in the 1-acre and smaller-zoned properties on Nov. 4. Leaves may be raked to the curbside until Sunday, Dec. 1. Leaves put out after that date will not be collected. The town will not collect leaves in the 2- and 4-acre zones (homeowners there are asked to compost leaves on their own properties). “Residents, and yard maintenance contractors who are picking up leaves from New Canaan properties, may deposit leaves at the town’s Composting Area located on Lapham Road near the entrance to Waveny Park,” town officials say. Contractors must have a proper permission form signed by the New Canaan property owner.
