A message from the New Canaan Fire Department: “The fire department will be starting our annual hydrant maintenance and flushing program. Annual flushing of the hydrants is necessary to provide better quality water and fire protection. The flushing removes potential debris in the system that can clog fire pumps, hoselines, and nozzles. We also ensure the hydrant drains so it will not freeze and be inoperable in the cold winter months. You may experience discolored water. If you experience discolored water, wait until we leave your area then run your cold water tap until it clears. During periods of discoloration, postpone washing clothes and limit your use of hot water until the cold water clears. Although this may cause a minimal inconvenience it is critical for life safety.”
