Men’s Club to hear from Elm Street Books manager

October 17 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free

Manda Riggs, manager of Elm Street Books for nearly 13 years, will speak to the New Canaan Men’s Club Friday, Oct. 17, providing insights into the literary genres that attract New Canaan readers, what books are likely to draw attention in time for holiday gift-giving and how independent bookstores are meeting the challenges of competing with online outlets.
The club meets in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. Riggs’ presentation will begin at 11:40 a.m., after the business portion of the meeting concludes.
Independent bookstores are experiencing a resurgence, as noted in numerous media reports, and a paper published by The Harvard Business School last month. Customers are drawn to the local bookstores, such as Elm Street Books, for the personalized experience they offer and for their connection to their communities, the paper said.
Riggs will discuss those dynamics and describe the books that top the reader lists in town. As this is also usually a busy time for publishers, Riggs can preview some of the holiday releases anticipated to reach the best sellers list.
The Men’s Club has openings for new members, men 55-years old and above. For information about joining, email ncmens@ncmens.org
