The following game summary of the New Canaan Soccer Association‘s Girls U10 Red team was submitted to NewCanaanite.com by Brian Flatow. If you have a youth sports write-up with photos, please contact Terry Dinan at terry@newcanaanite.com. The Girls U10 Red is coached by Barry Beattie, according to the association’s website, with sideline assistants George Mulry and Krista Tully, and manager Erin Perlitz.
Perennial rival Westport came out strong in the first half pushing the New Canaan girls back on their heels. But tough defense and outstanding goaltending from Ashley Barton kept Westport to one score. As the half went on, New Canaan pushed back on offense and evened up the score thanks to some gritty play getting to the net and a goal from Caitlin Tully.
In second half both teams battled and limited each other to long shots on goal from the outside. Carolyn Baran continued to bring confidence to the goaltender position and turned back every Westport shot and sent her teammates back up the field. As the half wore on it seemed this game might end in a tie.
But the New Canaan girls put together a strong drive that started in the defensive zone. Precise passing at mid-field by Hadley Beiles and Hollis Mulry set up a break to the net by Caitlin Tully who was fouled in the Penalty Area. On the resulting Penalty Kick, Tully decisively drilled the ball in the top right corner to lead her team to victory.
The team travels Sunday to Settlers Park in Southbury for its next game. Good luck, girls!
