A plant-based restaurant that opened five years ago in downtown New Canaan closed this past weekend.
Located at Main Street and East Avenue in what locals remember as the former “Wire Whisk” space, Greenology closed Sunday.

Clean and comfortable, the eatery emerged as a popular local spot for healthy smoothies, juices, soups, acai and protein bowls, sandwiches, salads and Jack’s Stir Brew coffee.
Reached by NewCanaanite.com, the business’s owner, James Marks, noted that he’s open to hearing from investors for a possible future iteration of Greenology in New Canaan.
“We also really want to thank the community for the tremendous outpouring of love and support for us,” Marks said. “I have received so many sad and very kind messages from our customers and the community.”
Opened at 96 Main St. in 2021, Greenology helped fill a niche in New Canaan with its wide range of vegan options. Marks himself was an active member of the business community, successfully campaigning for short-term spaces near the shop and changing the loading zone distribution downtown as well as hosting a composting program at the restaurant.
A sign in the window of the shop reads: “Thank you New Canaan! After much thought and a very heavy heart, we’ve made the decision to close Greenology New Canaan. This has been more than a business to us – it’s been a place filled with community, connection and so many meaningful moments. We are beyond grateful for every single person who walked through our doors, supported us and believed in what we created. While this chapter is coming to a close, we truly believe this is not the end of Greenology. It’s a reset – and we hope to bring Greenology back in a new way in the future. Thank you for being a part of our journey. It has meant everything to us. James and Helen Marks.”
Best healthy plant based restaurant in NC. Much needed option . Come back soon. Many will miss the ambiance plus truly whole organic foods.
Greenology will be missed. Its great coffee and welcoming atmosphere made it my preferred conference room for meetings. I would be interested in the economics of why it closed? Sales, rent, parking, etc.?
I’m truly saddened to hear this. Greenology had fantastic iced coffee, and that macro bowl was unbeatable for lunch. It was a bright spot in our town, and it will be missed.
The California Burger was our favorite for a Friday night take-out. I hope this decision wasn’t impacted by the parking problems in town. If so, I hope you can find a better location. We will come!
Our 5 year old grandaughter yesterday said, “Awww, I loved the pesto pasta!” We did too.
