Police on Christmas Eve arrested a 76-year-old New Canaan by warrant in connection with a forged building permit.

The warrant stems from a Nov. 7 complaint to police regarding a dispute between the man and the condominium association where he resides, officials said. According to a police report, the man lives in the Park Mead condominiums on Park Street.

The dispute involved construction work that the man had done in his own condo and in common areas of the complex, according to the report.

Through an investigation, police learned that the man had forged an official permit from the New Canaan Building Department to include additional work in his own unit that wasn’t part of the original permit, it said.

The unauthorized work had commenced and started to cause about $5,800 to $7,500 worth of damage in the common area, the report said.

Police charged the man with first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree forgery.

He turned himself in to police at about 2:10 p.m. on Dec. 24. Police released the man on $2,500 bond and scheduled him to appear Jan. 25 in state Superior Court.
