Municipal officials in the fall cited a Forest Street restaurant for multiple health code violations, including for an employee not wearing a mask, records show.
During an unannounced Oct. 1 inspection, a New Canaan Health Department sanitarian found the employee of Hashi Sushi not wearing a mask in the restaurant’s sushi prep area, according to a copy of the inspection report.
That was one of 11 violations cited at the restaurant, which failed the initial inspection and then passed a follow-up Oct. 15 re-inspection (despite being cited for five new violations).
Inspectors use a state Department of Public Health standard, citing eateries for violations that range in seriousness and corresponding weight from one to four points. A “failed” inspection is triggered either by one or more four-point or “risk factor” violations, or a total score of less than 80 points.
Hashi Sushi scored just 78 points. Other violations include an unclean floor underneath and behind equipment at the bar and sushi prep area, unclean walls, unclean exterior of ice chests, unclean shelving and dish racks stored on the floor.
Municipal sanitarians typically inspect local restaurants once or twice per year. The only New Canaan restaurant not inspected in 2020 was Tequila Mockingbird on Forest Street, records show. It last was inspected Dec. 12, 2019, records show, after failing an inspection Nov. 12 of that year.
