Congratulations to Grove Street furniture designer maker Tom Throop, owner of Black Creek Designs, on being selected to exhibit in this year’s virtual Smithsonian Craft Show, regarded as the most prestigious juried craft exhibition in the nation. Anticipating that the FDA and CDC will approve Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for children under 12, the district in partnership with the New Canaan Health Department is offering parents of kids in the system a chance to sign them up for a Nov. 11 vaccination clinic, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi said in an email to parents Thursday.

Officers were dispatched at about 9 a.m. Sunday to South Avenue and Elm Street on a report of an individual hunched over a bench and possibly in need of help, police said. The person turned out to be a 60-year-old Bronx, N.Y. woman wanted by NYPD for second-degree burglary, according to a police report. At police headquarters in New Canaan, the woman refused to be fingerprinted, and she was additionally charged with failure to comply with a fingerprint request, the report said.

New Canaan Highway Department members arrived at New Canaan Library at 6 a.m. last Friday to dig up plants the library donated to Waveny Care Center and other locations throughout town. Coordinated by New Canaan Beautification League, four highway department trucks left New Canaan Library at 7 a.m. filled with Deer Grass, Russian Sage, Arborvitaes, coneflowers, and a golden cypress tree. The plants were delivered to Waveny Care, where a group of NCBL volunteers transplanted in the front and back gardens of Waveny Care. Plants were also delivered to the mailbox garden on Pine Street, the New Canaan Nature Center and The Inn.

More than 97% of New Canaan Public Schools certified staff, such as teachers, administrators and counselors are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Luizzi said in Thursday’s email to parents. More than 94% of non-certified staff also are fully vaccinated, including teaching assistants, secretaries, custodians and food services personnel, he said. Those who are not vaccinated undergo mandatory testing every week.

The Board of Education, in partnership with the Hobbs family, it last month announced a new scholarship for NCHS graduates in honor of longtime town resident and educator Hazel Hobbs, who died in June. “Hazel was a passionate champion for children and students, and this needs-based scholarship has been established to honor her legacy and to continue her work on behalf of children,” district officials said in a press release, adding that the new scholarship “is intended to help a NCHS graduate who reflects the character and spirit of the woman it honors.”

The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of New Canaan held an annual golf competition and fundraiser Sept. 27 at Silvermine Golf Club, with Rand Insurance, Walter Stewart’s, Nurenu and Walbert Captial Management donating toward prizes that went to nonprofits including You Gotta Believe and Rotary International.

Finally, some more school news: the district’s K-12 health and physical education coordinator, Jonathan Adams, has been appointed as the first dean of students at Saxe Middle School. A New Canaan Public Schools employee since 2010, Adams earned a bachelors degree in physical education from William Paterson University, a master’s in health education from Lehman College, and an intermediate administrative certificate at Sacred Heart University.
