New Canaan Public Schools were closed Wednesday after icy road conditions in the early morning caused multiple accidents and disabled vehicles throughout town, officials say.
Emergency Management Director Russ Kimes sent out multiple town-wide communications starting at 7 a.m. urging residents to put off traveling through at least mid-morning.
“There are dozens of accidents and cars off the road across town and many secondary roads remain extremely dangerous,” Kimes said in a 9 a.m. update. “The town and state are working on getting salt down on the roads, but vehicles stuck and stranded only slow down progress.”
A bulletin posted to the school district’s website noted that all schools would be closed “due to flash freezing and black ice.”
“Roads are very dangerous, and will be until after 10:00,” the bulletin said.
Some business owners in downtown New Canaan also say they’re planning to open late today due to the road conditions.
