The New Canaan Aquianas artistic swimming team at the 2025 National & Junior Artistic Swimming Championships, held April 9 to 13 in Greensboro, N.C. Contributed
Congratulations to the New Canaan Aquianas artistic swimming team on winning the Junior High Point Team Award at the 2025 National & Junior Artistic Swimming Championships, held April 9 to 13 in Greensboro, N.C. The Aquianas’ coach, Laura Mase, was also named Junior Coach of the Year. “Though the New Canaan Aquianas were established nearly 50 years ago, this marks the first time in program history that the team has won these prestigious national titles,” the team says. “The Junior division of artistic swimming has been dominated by teams in California for decades. Over the years, the Aquianas have regularly placed in finals, medaled in events, and placed swimmers on the U.S. National Team, but they historically have not had the depth to win the high point trophy which is awarded based on a points system. This year, New Canaan High School senior, Viola Li, led the charge by capturing three silver medals. Her first was in the technical solo event. She then teamed up with Sophia Shen, from New Canaan and Rye Country Day, to earn silver medals in both the technical and free duet events. Overall, the Aquianas qualified 13 routines for finals, including two teams in the free team event. The combination of their placements and their depth of roster put them ahead of California teams like the Walnut Creek Aquanuts and Santa Clara Artistic Swimming who have battled it out for first and second place for decades.”
