New Canaan High School junior John Murphy, a Life Scout in New Canaan’s Troop 70, is seeking assistance for his Eagle Scout project. He plans to research veterans buried in Lakeview Cemetery, including interviews with their friends and family. Visitors will be able to access this information by scanning a graveside QR code with their phone. During Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, First Selectman Dionna Carlson congratulated Robin Bates-Mason on being named the new executive director of the New Canaan Land Trust. “They’re very lucky to get her. She’s quite a dynamo—we’re lucky to have her in town,” Carlson said during a section of the meeting dedicated to general matters before the town. Selectman Steve Karl said it’s “amazing” what Bates-Mason has been able to accomplish on the community’s behalf “in a short period of time.” He added: “And this is the perfect spot for her, so congratulations to Robin and congratulations to the Land Trust because they got a great find there.”

The state Superior Court judge assigned to the 8-30g affordable housing appeal of the New Canaan Planning & Zoning Commission’s denial of a proposal to build a 120-unit development at Weed and Elm Streets on Monday stipulated that a decision won’t be made until May 30. (It’s been postponed a number of times.)

During the recent annual meeting of the New Canaan Community Emergency Response Team or “CERT,” town leaders such as Carlson, Fire Chief Albe Bassett, NCPD Deputy Chief Andrew Walsh and Parks & Rec Director John Howe spoke in appreciation of the volunteer group’s contributions. CERT helps out at several large events such as May Fair, the Family Fourth and Caffeine & Carburetors. More than 50 new and active CERT members attended the meeting at Lapham Center, where Walsh presented a plaque expressing appreciation of the volunteer deployments that will be displayed at the new NCPD headquarters.

The National Charity League, Canaan Parish Chapter held its end-of-year celebration Tuesday at Waveny House. More than 140 mothers and daughters attended the event which featured an all chapter awards ceremony, new member induction, and senior recognition. “We are so proud of the commitment and enthusiasm of each and every member of NCL,” NCL President Janet Lee and President-Elect Susan Welch said in a joint statement. “This year our chapter served over 3,209 philanthropy hours and 2,782 leadership hours across 34 different philanthropic organizations.”

The Carriage Barn Arts Center is gearing up to launch Art In The Windows in partnership with the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. There will be a downtown kick-off event and art stroll from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday May 30 with events and receptions at various locations, and artwork will be on display and for sale through June 21 in 70 downtown store and business windows.
