Kristian Medel, 19, who gave an address of 45 Van Zan St., was charged with first degree larceny—a felony offense—as well as conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny and conspiracy. A 17-year-old male was arrested by warrant on Thursday on the same charges. Police withheld the teen’s name because of his age.

At about 9 a.m. on June 11, a Sunday, officers received a complaint about the stolen SUV, according to a police report. (In the same report, police remind residents to remove valuables from vehicles, lock up their cars and never leave them unlocked with keys inside.)

Two days later, on June 13, members of the Milford Police contacted the New Canaan Police Department’s Investigative Section, saying they’d located the stolen vehicle at a Motel 6 off of Interstate 95, the report said.

There, New Canaan Police searched the stolen car for evidence of potential suspects, it said. Police found property inside the SUV that had been stolen from unlocked vehicles in Norwalk driveways, the report said.

Based on video surveillance of the parking lot and statements made by Milford Police, New Canaan Police determined that Medel and the 17-year-old were responsible for the theft, it said.

Officers located and arrested Medel on scene at the Motel 6. He was held on $50,000 bond and scheduled to appear June 14 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Investigators on Thursday traveled to the Juvenile Detention Center in Bridgeport to arrest the 17-year-old, it said. He was being held there in connection with an arrest in Norwalk earlier in the month that involved stealing a car, the report said.
