Update 8:20 p.m.

The number of New Canaan homes without power jumped to 1,953, according to Eversource, nearly one-quarter of the utility’s customers in town.

According to Emergency Management Director Mike Handler, the Emergency Operations Center is now coordinating all response efforts. There are about 75 roads in town blocked with downed trees and power lines, Handler said in a town-wide call.

“All lines are assumed to be live and dangerous,” he said. “Given the condition of our roadways, we ask that you remain home and shelter in place.”

Call (203) 594-3500 with all non-emergencies and reserve 911 for true life-threatening emergencies. If you lose power, please report it to Eversource at (800) 286-2000.

Metro-North is reporting that the New Canaan Branch as well as between South Norwalk and New Haven train service has been suspended. The Merritt Parkway is closed northbound in the area of exit 36.

Update 7:45 p.m.

New Canaan Public Schools are cancelled Thursday due to damage caused by the winter storm.

“The many trees downed by the storm have caused numerous road closures and dangerous conditions where wires have been exposed,” administrators said in an email.

Emergency responders dealt with multiple trees falling across town roads, often taking power lines with them. As of 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Eversource reported a full 12 percent of New Canaan customers without power, or 978 homes.

Update 7:15 p.m.

Six percent of Eversource customers in New Canaan, or 515 homes, are without power, according to the utility. New Canaan firefighters in the last two hours have responded to calls involving power lines on Valley Road, Thurton Drive and White Oak Shade Road.

Update 6:15 p.m.

About 4 percent of Eversource customers in New Canaan, or 304 total homes, are without power, according to the utility. A wet, heavy snow continues to fall in New Canaan and the region as temperatures drop, putting weight on tree limbs and threatening nearby power lines.

All Bankwell branches also will be closed, according to the bank, and municipal officials announced that Town Hall offices will close at 11:30 a.m.

The town is under a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service, which as of 4 p.m. Wednesday predicted six to 11 inches of snow, falling most heavily in the afternoon.

“Travel will be very difficult to impossible, including during the evening commute on Wednesday,” according to the warning. “Travel will also be difficult during the morning commute. Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times. Power outages due to heavy snow weighing down trees or their limbs will be possible.”

The storm comes on the heels of high winds that knocked out power to hundreds of New Canaan homes over the weekend.
