New Canaan Police last week brought new charges against a local man arrested recently on multiple charges following a domestic incident.
While processing the 48-year-old Millport Avenue man on charges of violation of a protective order—a felony offense—and third-degree assault, police say they brought an additional charge of violation of a protective order.
The man has a history of arrests here. According to Connecticut Judicial Branch records, he pleaded guilty last month to third-degree burglary in connection with a 2017 incident and is still facing a violation of probation charge in connection with the same case. He also has pleaded guilty to violation of a protective order in connection with a 2018 incident. He has not yet pleaded to a disorderly conduct charge brought in September.
In all cases, he was arrested by New Canaan Police.
He was sentenced in 2014 to 10 days in jail on a disorderly conduct charge that stemmed from an incident the prior year, court records show, and in 2014 pleaded guilty to a charge of violation of a protective order.
He also pleaded guilty to a 2015 disorderly conduct charge and 2017 sixth-degree larceny charge, both from the New Milford Police Department, and has been found guilty of motor vehicle charges.
Following the most recent charges—brought to authorities following an Oct. 20 incident—New Canaan Police held the man on a total $75,000 bond and scheduled him to appear Oct. 27 in state Superior Court.
Police withheld details of the new charges, saying it’s a domestic matter.
A person is guilty of third-degree assault, according to state law, when “with intent to cause physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such person or to a third person” or “recklessly causes serious physical injury to another person or “with criminal negligence, he causes physical injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon, a dangerous instrument or an electronic defense weapon,” among other reasons.
