Alexander John Szymanowski

Alex was raised in Stamford, CT and attended Stamford Catholic High School, graduating in 1972. While attending Stamford Catholic, Alex attained the rank of Eagle Scout by organizing a clean-up of the Rippowam River. He graduated Bryant College in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement and earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from The University of New Haven in 2001. Before attending Bryant College, Alex planned to major in accounting before finding his passion for law enforcement.

On October 1st, 1976 Alex was sworn in as a member of the New Canaan Police Department. On May 2nd, 1988 he joined the Investigative Section and in November of that year was promoted to Sergeant. He served as a Detective for 16 years in New Canaan before retiring in November, 2004. Shortly after leaving New Canaan, Alex joined the State of Connecticut Department of Revenue Services where he served as a Tax Enforcement Special Agent until April, 2022 when he retired full time. Even after his retirement, Alex was a major supporter of his fellow Officers and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

Alex enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and Rottweilers. He enjoyed listening to Blues music and especially The Grateful Dead. He loved going on spur-of-the moment day trips to flea markets, or well-planned adventures. Alex was an avid reader, and could usually be found with a book of crossword puzzles nearby. He was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan as well as a New York Yankees fan. Alex was funny, loving, and sarcastic all in one. If you needed something he would take care of it. He will be missed by many who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, his son, Alexander John Jr. (Victoria), of Cambridge MA, his daughter, Karlee, of Stamford and his brother in-law, Gary A. Antonello, of New Canaan. He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Francis, and his mother, Sophie.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NLEOMF.org (National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund).
