DUI Arrest for Man, 19, After Vehicle Goes Down Embankment

A 19-year-old man appears to have been uninjured after his car went down an embankment off of Buttery Road at about 3 a.m. Sunday, police said. New Canaan police gave this account (containing accusations not proven in court) of the incident:

Police were called at 3:12 a.m., and when they got to the scene, the driver was seen standing outside the vehicle in the woods. The driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, so field sobriety tests were administered. He didn’t pass them. He refused a blood-alcohol test at New Canaan Police Headquarters.

Underage Party with Booze on West Road Broken Up by Cops

A 1:01 a.m. Saturday call to police ended an underage-drinking party on West Road near Dans Highway, New Canaan police said. Police gave this account (with accusations not proven in court) of the incident:

When police arrived, they saw groups of youths trying to flee the property, although the heavily wooded area around the house prevented many of them from getting far. Approaching the house, police found numerous empty and full beer cans. Nobody they found at the scene was 21 years old or older. Officers found the host, a 19-year-old resident of the home, and charged her with permitting minors to illegally possess liquor and procuring liquor for minors.

School Starts Aug 27, Supply Lists Published, Tax-Free Week Thru Aug 22

The first day of school in New Canaan, Thursday, Aug. 27, is less than two weeks away, and if parents haven’t got kids’ school supplies yet, the time is now. New Canaan Public Schools has published lists of school supplies to buy for students in each elementary schools (but not Saxe Middle School or the high school) on this Web page, or you can go directly to the lists (in PDF format) here:

Connecticut Tax-Free Week starts on Sunday and means you won’t be paying the state sales tax on most items of clothing priced (or sale priced) at less than $100. The state won’t charge for taxes through the week (ending Saturday, Aug. 22).

Two Private ‘Slow’ Signs Missing from Shady Knoll Lane

A resident of Shady Knoll Lane reported the theft of two “Slow” signs from the end of his driveway sometime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Each sign was in the form of a figure of a person with a red hat holding a red flag and having the word “Slow” on its body. The signs were valued at $35 apiece.
